Gear Reviews

I'm always on the lookout for solid survival and camping gear and some gadgets. I figure the least I can do is write reviews of the gear I've bought to give people an idea of some of the good gear out there... and to warn them away from things I think are crap. Over the years I've used a lot of different gear, some of it was really good, some was good but over priced, some of it was pure crap. I'm not an expert so please do some research on the products before you go out and buy them.

For many things I am very critical and very hard to please. Case in point is my BOB (Bug Out Bag) and general camping backpack. I spent a lot of time online looking at a lot of backpacks. I had some very specific requirements for my backpack - it had to be huge 100+ litres, external frame, hydration compatible, removable daypack, multiple internal sections, top pocket, two side pockets, top load with a U zipper and neutral color. I ended up with a Jansport Colter at 120 litres or 7300 cubic inches of storage external frame backpack. I modified the backpack and added a spiderweb of 1 inch webbing and buckles to help hold the pack bag to the frame and remove the stress from the velcro tabs holding the bag to the frame and allow me to attach other gear like my hatchet and take-down buck saw. I can put a lot of gear in that backpack, which is good since I carry some bulky but light items in there.
